After buying Donuts from all of these stores, I can safely say that my favorites are Ava’s, Hole, and HenDough. My family leans more towards Vortex and Stay Glazed. However, if I want a bakery experience with doughnuts, McFarland’s is my choice; just know it is located in Hendersonville.
You cannot go wrong with any of the places!
Ava’s is located in South Asheville in the Biltmore Park area. Thick doughnuts; that is how my kids describe the doughnuts from Ava’s. Ava’s manages to make a dense yet quite soft doughnut if that is what you are after. They are some of the tastiest donuts in Asheville. If you are looking for a presentation, meaning you want to bring the office a box of fantastic-looking doughnuts, I would go elsewhere as they crame their donuts into their boxes with no regard for the donut’s appearance. Protip, get there early as they tend to sell out later in the day.
If you’re looking for an old-school bakery that serves amazing donuts, this is your spot. Located in downtown Hendersonville MacFarlane’s is a staple for locals. Their donuts are on point, but they also offer many baked goods, cookies, cakes, and all sorts of sweets.
Located downtown, Stay Glazed claims to be a No-Frills space with classic and creative Donuts. My kids loved the donuts here, especially the Simpsons donut and the c-real Donuts with Fruity Pebbles or Cocoa Puffs. I would say my favorite donut here was a s’mores donut and if I had to pick one donut shop solely on the atmosphere or ambiance, it would be Stay Glazed. I will be back to try their breakfast menu!
Located in West Asheville, you will want to get there early and get them hot and fresh! It may be the perfect hot donut in Asheville. For some locals, if you ask them what is the absolute best donut in Asheville, they will say without a doubt it is Hole Donuts. I will let you be the judge, but this is a must if you are a donut enthusiast.
Geraldine’s is a Traditional Bakery that made the list with a wide selection of donuts. They have some specialty donuts she will not likely find elsewhere, such as a potato donut. Geraldine’s Bakery also offers a wide variety of other baked goods, I recommend the bagels.
Unlike the others on this list, this is a chain donut shop, but I added them because they have some amazing flavors of donuts. However, I’m not sure they can be the best Asheville has to offer, but I think it’s worth going if you do not have a Duck what Donut in your area. I would describe their donuts as cake donuts with a huge variety of toppings
Great place to stop in for a donut and coffee, Vortex is one of my favorites in downtown Asheville it has to be between them and Hole Donuts who has the best donut and I Asheville. These guys offer a vegan donut if you’re into that sort of thing.
These donuts are out of the box; I often feel doughnut shops always try to create something new and exciting but fall short, not these flavors. What we tried: Glazed, Cinnamon Sugar, Boston Creme, Caramel Espresso, Creme Brulee, Twix and Almond
