A fungus eating another fungus
After heavy rain beside the Davidson River, a strange yellow bolete offered a first lesson in how complicated the forest becomes when you stop and look closely.

The first wet walk
This was the first outing made specifically for Appalachian Field Notes. The little travel tripod broke almost immediately. Then the rain returned. What survived the weather was a short series of photographs made low to the ground beneath a tunnel of rhododendron.
The mushrooms were close to the Davidson River, rooted in wet leaf litter and woody debris after heavy rain. One looked recognizably bolete-like: a broad cap held above a thick stem. Nearby fruiting bodies looked almost folded over themselves, their normal architecture blurred beneath a yellow-to-orange covering. A fly paused on one of them long enough to become part of the record.
The best current explanation is more interesting than a single mushroom name: this appears to be a mushroom being colonized by another fungus.

A probable bolete mold
Hypomyces is a genus of fungi whose members live on other fungi. The probable host here is a bolete-like mushroom. Instead of gills, most boletes produce spores from a field of tiny pores beneath the cap, although the underside was not clearly documented during this rain-shortened encounter.
The “cf.” means compare with. It records that the photographs resemble H. chrysospermus without pretending the species has been confirmed.

What the yellow covering may be doing
The bolete mold commonly called the “bolete eater” begins as a pale or whitish growth over its host. As it develops, the covering can become powdery and golden yellow, later darkening toward brown. When colonization is extensive, it can cover the cap, stem, and spore-bearing surface so thoroughly that identifying the original bolete becomes difficult.
That process offers a plausible explanation for the swollen, folded forms in this group. The photographs record an interaction, not merely an object: the visible structure may include both a boletoid host and a mycoparasitic Hypomyces.
The fruiting bodies appeared on saturated ground after substantial rain. Moisture does not prove the identification, but wet summer conditions often make fungal growth conspicuous in the Southern Appalachians.

A responsible field record separates what the camera shows from what the observer infers. The genus-level interpretation is plausible; the species-level name remains a hypothesis.

The closest complication
Hypomyces microspermus can be visually indistinguishable from H. chrysospermus. Host association and microscopic spore size help separate them.
What would confirm it
A carefully documented specimen, the identifiable host, microscopy, and—if needed—DNA sequencing examined by an experienced mycologist.

The fly belongs in the story
The fly provides scale and reminds us that a mushroom is habitat as well as organism. Many flies visit fungi, and some use fungal fruiting bodies for food or larval development. This photograph alone cannot establish what this individual was doing.
That restraint matters. “A fly visited the mushroom” is a direct observation. “The fly was feeding” would be an inference. Field Notes will preserve that distinction.
The point was never to begin with something rare. It was to begin noticing what was already there.

Finding the trail
The observation was made along Exercise Trail #344 in the Davidson River Campground area of Pisgah National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service describes it as an easy, sign-marked 1.5-mile loop with several access points. Much of the walk follows the river, with white-pine stands, small-stream crossings, and connections near the Pisgah District Ranger Station and Art Loeb trailhead.
After warm rain, slow down around wet leaf litter, decaying wood, mossy edges, and rhododendron shade. Look before stepping. Fruiting bodies can appear quickly and disappear just as quickly through decay, weather, wildlife, or foot traffic.

Exactly as found
Begin with the surrounding habitat before touching or moving anything.
Whole fruiting body
Record the complete cap, stem, growth form, and nearby individuals.
Underside
Show whether the spore-bearing surface has pores, gills, teeth, or another structure.
Base and scale
Photograph the stem attachment and include a ruler or another unambiguous scale.
Thirty-second note
Record date, rain, substrate, nearby trees, abundance, odor, and any visible color change.
