A small world in motion
A flat-backed millipede crossed one rain-darkened strip of fallen wood. In the next three minutes, the frame widened to include a red assassin-bug nymph and islands of yellow jelly fungus.

Seven frames, one saturated log
The first photographs isolate movement: dark armored rings above a pale current of legs. The camera then rises. The millipede is no longer alone, and the fallen wood stops reading as background. It becomes the habitat—and the story.

The lead
Armor above. A wave below.
Most trunk rings in a millipede are diplosegments—formed from the fusion of two ancestral segments—and carry two pairs of legs. In motion, those legs do not strike together. Their offset timing sends a traveling wave down the body.

The greenhouse or garden millipede is a small, widely introduced polydesmid associated with cool, moist, organic-rich places—including rotting logs.

Why “cf.”? It means “compare with.” The visible combination fits Oxidus gracilis well, but a photograph without scale or specimen-level characters should not be made more certain than the evidence allows. Confidence is high at order level and lower at species level.

Three lives. One frame.
This is evidence of proximity, not interaction. The assassin-bug nymph may be a predator, the millipede may process decaying material, and the jelly fungus may be parasitizing another fungus—but this photograph does not show one feeding on another.

The narrow black head, constricted neck, long pale legs and antennae, red-orange wingless abdomen, and prominent hinged beak fit a young assassin bug. Pale appendages favor Zelus; Z. luridus is plausible but not confirmed from this nymph alone.

Witch’s-butter type,
species deferred
The yellow gelatinous lobes invite a comparison with Tremella mesenterica, but yellow jelly fungi are best separated with the host wood and associated crust fungus in view. The dedicated witch’s-butter set will carry that identification—and can link back to this encounter.
Fallen wood
Stores moisture and creates protected surfaces, fissures, and food-rich pockets.
Fungi & microbes
Alter wood chemistry and structure; jelly fungi may themselves parasitize other fungi.
Detritivores
Millipedes commonly consume decaying plant matter and its microbial films, fragmenting material further.
Hunters
Assassin bugs stalk or ambush small invertebrates with sticky forelegs and piercing mouthparts.
These are general ecological roles, not a claimed feeding chain among the three organisms photographed here.
The log widens
From individual to habitat
Field record
After rain, the hidden layer surfaced.
The sequence was made beside Davidson River on saturated fallen wood in moist riparian forest. Garden millipedes typically remain under logs, stones, leaf litter and other cool organic cover. Heavy rain changes those moisture boundaries and can bring millipedes into view.
No organism was collected or repositioned. The record is photographic, and all three were left in place.
